Acknowledging the Struggle

Searching for a job can be emotionally taxing, especially when faced with rejection or prolonged periods of uncertainty. It's important to acknowledge the challenges you may encounter along the way and permit yourself to feel the full range of emotions from the job search process. Remember, sometimes, feeling frustrated, disappointed, or overwhelmed is okay.

Embracing Self-Compassion

During moments of doubt or difficulty, practising self-compassion and treating yourself with kindness is essential. Recognise that job hunting does not reflect your worth or abilities as a person. Be gentle with yourself, celebrate your accomplishments, and remind yourself that setbacks are a natural part of the journey.

The Power of the Pivot

As Richard N Bolles famously said, "Just because you can't find them doesn't mean they don't exist. You've got to change the way you're looking for them." Embracing the pivot means being open to exploring new opportunities, industries, or career paths that may not have been part of your original plan. It's about adapting to changing circumstances, seizing new possibilities, and staying resilient in adversity.

Practical actions: Navigating the challenges.

What am I going to do now? That is a great question, check out some practical actions:

  • Self-Reflection and Assessment: Take the time to reflect on your interests, strengths, and career goals. Assess your skills, experiences, and areas for development. Is there an adjustment or new skills area you can explore? Look at the industries or roles that align with your values and aspirations. Is there a role you still need to consider, or is it called something else in another industry? Could there be another job title to explore?

  • Brainstorm Options: ChatGPT can be a great tool for new ideas and exploring options. Get curious and explore. List out your expertise and main skill areas and use a prompt something like:

    • Acting as a recruiter, what role or industry would you recommend based on the following skills [write a list].

    • In the past, I have done X, Y, and Z jobs in the A, C, and B industries; I like doing 1,2,3. Get creative; what could be my next career move?

    • I have done X for the last X years; I want to make a change; what are some career paths or roles I should consider?

ChatGPT can get you out of your head and open up ideas and options. No, it won't give you a perfect answer, but can it open a door to explore new ideas? Absolutely!

  • Research and Networking: Jump on Google and LinkedIn. Conduct thorough research on industries, companies, and roles that interest you. Utilise professional networking platforms like LinkedIn to connect with individuals in your target industries and learn about potential opportunities. Remember, connection means people; don't message everyone asking if they have work; create a connection, get curious about them, and connect through questions, coffee and curiosity. Try industry events, webinars, and workshops to expand your network and gather insights. Will there be a direct line to a new role? Probably not, but a real connection is how you build a network, which will help in the future.

  • Skill Development and Training: Identify any gaps in your skillset that may be hindering your job search and pivot. Consider pursuing additional education, certifications, or training programs to enhance your qualifications and make yourself more competitive in your desired field. Remember, self-driven study is also an option. You don't always need a certificate, but you need the knowledge to know what to do and what to ask. Hello YouTube!

Do temporary or contract positions align with your lifestyle and career goals? They can help you gain experience and build connections in your new field.

  • Stay Persistent and Resilient: Recognise that job hunting and pivoting in your job search may take time and perseverance. Stay persistent in your efforts, remain open to feedback, and do your best to maintain a positive attitude throughout the process. Need a pick-me-up? Here are some quotes to remind you that you are not alone and will get there!

"When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one that has opened for us." – Alexander Graham Bell

This quote reminds us of the importance of resilience and adaptability in adversity. When one opportunity closes, it's easy to dwell on the disappointment, but focusing too long on what's lost can close our eyes to new possibilities that may be waiting just around the corner. Acknowledge setbacks but remain open to new opportunities that may arise.

"Success seems to be connected to action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they never quit." – JW Marriott

Success is not just about talent or luck; it's about taking consistent action and persevering through challenges. Successful individuals understand that making mistakes and encountering obstacles are inevitable parts of the journey. However, what sets them apart is their willingness to keep moving forward despite setbacks. The key takeaway is to embrace a mindset of continuous improvement and resilience, understanding that progress is made through consistent effort and learning from failures.

"The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers." – M Scott Peck

You may have noticed that we like this quote; we know job hunting is hard, but it highlights the transformative power of discomfort and dissatisfaction. Our greatest moments of growth and self-discovery often come during times of discomfort or uncertainty when we're forced to reevaluate our circumstances and search for deeper meaning or fulfilment. Embracing these moments as opportunities for reset and introspection can lead us to discover new paths and perspectives in our lives and careers.

"You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it." – Maya Angelou

Encountering defeats and setbacks is an inevitable part of life (and job hunting), but how we respond to them defines our character and resilience. Instead of allowing defeats to define us, they should serve as valuable learning experiences that shape our resilience and determination. Understanding that setbacks are not the end. Setbacks empower us to rise stronger and more resilient than before.
